As you pull into Maple Hill Estates, just 22 or 23 easy and scenic minutes north of downtown Kingston, it’s this marvellous house that you see first at the bottom of the hill, set well back from the road behind its striking black aluminum fence, and amid manicured lawns and a variety of pretty, mature trees. With its turrets offering a knowing nod to French chateaus (and also to fairytale castles) it’s a really dreamy sort of setting. The light out here is brightened by Dog Lake, and all the colours are intensified just a shade. You could play croquet out here on the emerald grass, that was one of my first thoughts (right after “Wow!”), and feel like you were living in it well, doing the address some sort of justice.
With its generous allotment of large windows and decks, wraparound porches and verandahs, its luxurious finishes, the immediate feeling is of living every day at an exclusive three-bed getaway, a place with a months-long waiting list. It’s a house so well put-together it feels almost reasonable to expect four-star meals to prepare themselves and even the car to put itself away. But perhaps you wouldn’t want all the company, the help, that those miracles imply. Better maybe to pad around quietly just you and the family, pointing out the orioles high in the trees, the deer on the lawn.
The new kitchen is splendid, with doors out to the deck. And there’s main-floor laundry too, and a master suite that spreads the width of the house as befitting the special event that a good night’s sleep really is. There’s a finished basement with an office and den, and a walkout to the acre and a half and the woods at the rear, the water access down the street.
There’s an airtight wood fireplace in the living room, by the way, and that will come into its own later, when the fall arrives, and then the snow. The house will feel entirely different is my suspicion, as if set at the foot of a mountain, and you’ll likely ski these quiet streets and then head out onto the frozen waters, return an hour later with your face aglow, and the logs you cut last year nicely ablaze. That is the future, or one of them, that is possible for you now that you’ve found 3887 Stone Point.
