The Bigger Picture
After a little too much Prosecco, and stumbling homewards in dawn’s solar dazzle, it’s distinctly possible that upon passing 198 Raglan Road you’d remark to yourself that this utterly delightful and diminutive detached home reminds you of a Toblerone segment, a glittering chocolate peak pushed into the green slope and then decorated with a cedar shake porch and a lime cream door. You’d wonder next, of course, whether someone had spiked your bubbly, and hope ardently that you hadn’t spoken out loud, but the vision is understandable, so dreamy a confection is this so-sweet renovated (and detached) home. All would be quickly forgiven. Out would come the cameras, up would pull the journalists. You’re a visionary, they’d declare. There are only two bedrooms, but the spacious primary is in the loft, all Expressionist angles and roofline reverie. The bed fairly sprawls beneath the eaves. The second bedroom is on the ground floor, off to one side and well-separated from the fantastically made-over main space with its separate living and dining areas. It really is as if you’ve wandered onto a film set, a rom-com hangout, a design mag centre-spread - those pitch-perfect pale floors and the intensely white walls. The kitchen is sweet and charming, looks over the outdoor space and the off-street parking. It’s rare I give so little guidance to homeowners, and feel the right move is to simply call in the videographer, plant the sign. But 198 Raglan Road, near the corner of Barrie Street and, is that rare bird, that shooting star, that bite of Swiss chocolate. Rarest of all is the price, I suppose, given the address, along with the built-in flair, and all the convenience of setting up right downtown, near the shops, and the park, and the university.
