The Bigger Picture

There’s something so disarmingly fresh and crisp about 113 Raglan Road. I noted it again while looking through the Iguide photos this week. All those pure lines and colours set against fall’s slightly milky blue sky. Geometries good enough for a text book. The corner of the house as true as a plumb line dropped from the treetops. It is intensely real, almost too good to be true. Wreathe it in snow and it is the stuff of greeting cards.

It is not always this way. Some of the houses in this pretty neighbourhood lean near-balefully into the breeze, and slump tipsy into the hillsides. They are good homes all the same, but they just seem so … exhausted. There is a place just down the road, for example, all red in the face, asthmatic, structurally wheezy, and it tilts to the east like a Jello mould set on a warm counter and then forgotten.

113 Raglan Rd is the super-fit cousin to these homes. Pampered for a century now, it will almost certainly outlast us all.

The renovations are exquisite here and all the required permits were pulled. The place exudes a modest, reassuring confidence, and a modern high-waisted sort of swagger. A two-storey Manhattan apartment comes to mind (but at a tenth of the price). The rooms fill up in the evenings, I am convinced, with conversations both serious and comic. An Evelyn Waugh novel writ large. It is the life of the party, the talk of the town. A film in waiting.

But you care more about the fit and finish, I get that. Well it’s fantastic. And perhaps also about the in-law suite down below that which, if you kept it rented, would bring in enough to cover a 300K mortgage. The exposed limestone in that apartment thrills you too, the subway tile and the walkout to the lavish gardens. The fact that you sit at the foot of Redan St, that short block into McBurney. Not even ten minutes from Princess, or the river, or Monster Pizza, Novel Idea, Daughters.
