411-121 Queen St - $415,000

The Essentials

A pristine one-bedroom east-facing condominium on the fourth floor of the much-loved Anna Lane building.

The Bigger Picture

It is the impossibility of simple pleasures that grates most. A shoulder to shoulder walk down the high street. A coffee and newspaper taken at a cafe stool. A weekend trip to a bigger city. Just yesterday, I followed a smoker up Wellington Street. It was only for a few seconds, but the smell and taste of their Matinees was instantly inside my mask, and in my mouth, my lungs. It was unnerving, and for a panicked moment I wanted to run, some place to hide.

I don’t think that instinct is unusual at all. We all arrive home at day’s end and realise we’re exhaling properly for the first time, don’t we? We lean casually in our kitchen doorways without thinking twice. We (gulp) share a glass. At this oddest of times, we look to our homes more than ever for sanctuary.

I know that when I stood earlier this week at the window of this fourth-floor condominium, its clean white walls arrayed behind me and the grey city spread out below me, there was the sense of moving for a few moments beyond all the ordinary fears, of breathing easy again. The appointment provided some unexpected respite from the madding crowd.

I imagine that living here would do the same, only in a more permanent fashion. It would become your high-in-the-sky getaway, your safe place.

It is not that there is anything particularly elaborate here. The lines are simple, clean. Entering the main space the eye is drawn immediately along the counter’s edge and on out over the balcony. The gaze settles eventually somewhere out in the harbour. It is a perfectly executed exercise in perspective.

There is warmth to the arrangement too, this is not some arid, dystopian space. I could see my art on the walls here. See myself cooking, the sliding doors open to the city’s gentle hubbub. I would set up an office in the den and write better words than these. I would look about and surely describe myself as being happy.

The more straightforward description of the condominium is in the realtor.ca listing, right here. The condo fees and so on. The taxes.

The rather snazzy iGuide tour is right here.

The sellers’ plan is to review any offers on Tuesday March 2nd. We’d love to show you around.
